Core Post #3 Today's White Trash

This post is a little difficult for me to write because I hate to bring negative attention to New Jersey (born & raised).  But after reading The King of White Trash Culture, I couldn't help think of "The Queen" of white trash culture: SNOOKIE.  And for the sake of my point here I'll admit that Snookie is an example of Italian white trash.  Goel Sweeney defines white trash "as an aesthetic…taste is not defined by LA or New York."  Sweeney also defines white trash as a style that favors details, brightness and presentation.  Theres an emphasis on "stuff" rather than emphasis.  After reading that, I couldn't help but think of the trashy outfits Snookie would put together for her nights out at the jersey shore.

Here Snooki is seen in neon colors, huge slippers and sunglasses, and just like Sweeney listed, a love for animal prints.

Snooki's location on the reality show Jersey Shore is an example of Sweeney's definition of "carnival".  Sweeney defines carnival as a "place of laughter, bad taste, loud and irreverent music, parody free speech, bodily functions, eating and feasting, a place where excess is glorified".  On the show, Snooki makes the Seaside Boardwalk her own carnival.  While on the boardwalk, Snooki has been filmed running around in deplorable outfits, dancing to music that is loud and crude, peeing in public, revealing her body in indecent ways, and drunk eating more times than any viewer can keep track of. 

    

Bringing this all back to Elvis, I must clarify that I am not trying to compare Snooki to Elvis.  More so, I am saying that Snooki is closer to the fans that have idolized Elvis all these years.  I also must note that now Snooki has people idolizing her for her own version of "white trash".
